Cars

Image
This film was a complete 180 from everything else that we have watched yet it addressed some very interesting topics and themes. It was weird that this was my first actual time seeing the movie and seeing the animation especially from this time was amazing. I think overall it still holds up well as Pixar's top films! Can't forget about the soundtrack, the songs did a really good job to draw out the emotion and setting the tone of what was happening on the screen We start with our main character Lightning McQueen who is a rookie racecar who is completely full of himself with one goal in mind. During the race to earn the Piston Cup Lightning manages to end up in a 3 way tie. In order to settle the tie, there was going to be a tiebreaker race in California. Lightning being so eager to be the first one in every aspect, he pushes Max - his transportation- to go in one trip. This resulted in him falling asleep and Lightning getting separated eventually landing himself in Radiator S...

Moonlight

Image
I really enjoyed this film, it is very different from many of the other films that we have watched in class in the best possible way. This film addresses many different issues that some communities face. Particularly the black community and how growing up in struggling areas can have an affect on someone. The film was broken up in 3 sections, Little, Chiron, Black. Each addressing different parts of his life and the identity that he has either chosen or been given. I really liked how the theme of identity was shown throughout the film. We have Little, a nickname given to him by his peers. Little also was a very timid kid that doesn't say much who was bullied throughout school, even being chased home. During one of these chases Little hides in what appears to be a drug house until the other kids leave him along. He then meets Juan who takes him home where Little learns skills such as swimming and how to choose who he wants to be. When being returned back home Little's mom, who...

Jaws

Image
For being my first time watch through of this blockbuster classic I was unsure what to expect. This film takes place in a small resort town that gets a lot of revenue with the tourists wanting to go to the beach. However, there have been deadly shark attacks! Instead of shutting down the beach for public safety, those in charge tried their best to keep the information unknown to continue generating money.  A scene that I really didn't understand was the ending, particularly the point of the cage scene. upon my first watch I assumed that Hooper was being sent to his death, especially when he dropped the only weapon to defend himself. But after looking into the background of the scene it began to make more sense.  It is important to remember that this was filmed before CGI, so some of the choices made were due to these limitations. Looking into the behind the scenes I learned that they used many optical illusions to make Jaws look huge. This included using a smaller boat,...

Swiss Army Man

Image
Swiss Army Man was truly an experience to watch. The opening scene featuring our protagonist, Hank, attempting to end his life to which he spots Manny wash up on shore. In a moment of desperation that someone could help him he accidently knocks the bucket over and momentarily hangs himself before the rope luckily breaks. This film tackles things such as what is normal vs. acceptable in our society by having Manny question everything, similar to that of a toddler. We follow as they try to escape the wilderness and learn more about Hank's life before he ended up stranded. There we learn about the trauma he may have with his family and his regrets of never feeling confident enough to shoot his shot with the girl on the bus. A scene that I really thought was powerful was where Hank and Manny were crossing the metal pipes. This part specifically I felt Manny began to express Hank's internal thoughts and feelings. Manny starts explaining that he is feeling certain emotions without k...

GET OUT

Image
Being my first time watching get out, I was very excited to finally watch it. The story itself was very compelling and kept me on my toes and had my heart pounding. I truly felt the anxiety the characters felt and that was such a unique experience for me. Several of the scenes had things I could deeply relate to in some way along with so many references to many aspects of things in my own life. For example, the scene where Chris is going in for a fist bump and is met with this weird handshake, this was both hilarious and relatable. The editing was unreal. The sunken place was such a, dare I say, mind boggling thing to see. I felt that he was able to perfectly represent a state of mind that it so hard to describe to others who haven’t been there.  . Another thing that just stuck with me is both the beginning and ending scene, The beginning scene is Rose looking at some desserts which is being paralleled with Chris looking at himself getting ready in the mirror. My interpret...

Marie Antoinette review

Image
I enjoyed this film more than I had originally thought I would. The beginning I was very confused due to the lack of historical background regarding the characters, which was only somewhat explained in their cultural relevance. I noticed that this film used a LOT of symmetry and all these extravagant backgrounds and shots, it was compelling to just look at all the detail they put into each scene. The costumes were also very detailed and intricate. Especially Marie’s hair, I was curious how tall it would be as the film was continuing.  If im being honest I was very lost with the story that was being told, to me it seemed to be about a woman who married into power to help protect her country. But once she married in, she just started having a lot of fun and did not seem really focused on any political issues or dealing with how the French were viewing her. Granted she is fairly young during this time; I feel like I didn’t get something crucial in understanding this film. What ...

Rear Window discussion

Image
1.) How did LB Jefferies break his leg? Jefferies broke his leg, the first time, trying to get the perfect shot of some kind of racing meet. I'm assuming he was standing at the finish line and was not able to get out of the way in time. But he got the shot, so it was worth it I suppose. 2.) What is the significance of always being in Jefferies’ window? Being that his entire career is about getting the perfect shot, he's practically always peering into other people's lives through his on lens. I think by framing the story this way it asks the question about perception of other people's lives. From what he's able to see of people's home life he begins to make assumptions about their lives whether they're true or not. 3.) Would Jeffries have caught Lars if he wasn’t injured and in his wheelchair? Why or why not? I dont think he would have. As a man who practically devotes his live to his work, I doubt he would stay at home for anything besides sleeping. Because...
