Swiss Army Man

Swiss Army Man was truly an experience to watch. The opening scene featuring our protagonist, Hank, attempting to end his life to which he spots Manny wash up on shore. In a moment of desperation that someone could help him he accidently knocks the bucket over and momentarily hangs himself before the rope luckily breaks. This film tackles things such as what is normal vs. acceptable in our society by having Manny question everything, similar to that of a toddler. We follow as they try to escape the wilderness and learn more about Hank's life before he ended up stranded. There we learn about the trauma he may have with his family and his regrets of never feeling confident enough to shoot his shot with the girl on the bus.

A scene that I really thought was powerful was where Hank and Manny were crossing the metal pipes. This part specifically I felt Manny began to express Hank's internal thoughts and feelings. Manny starts explaining that he is feeling certain emotions without knowing the name of them. When the pipe breaks and they fall, Manny says he knows what emotion he's feeling, its fear. Fear of dying and fear of loosing Hank and those close to him. While he is saying this Hank is once again hanging by a noose.
I think that Hank is truly scared of death, something he only realized after his first attempt failed. A thing that people who have failed to fully commit to their plan. A more well known story of this would be the golden gate bridge suicide survivor, in an interview stated "The millisecond my hands left the rail, it was instant regret for my actions".

Tackling hard topics such as self acceptance and suicidal ideation in this film was done in such a creative way that it allows for those conversations amongst us, the viewers, on what is weird versus what is normal in our society and why does it have to be that way?
